Can you imagine what it felt like to tip-toe in to ask our 3-year-old for Snuggle Time, only to watch in horror as she screwed up her adorable little face into a scowl and say,
Yeah, you know the “No” I’m talking about. The one all 18-month-olds master and never leave behind until adulthood? The one with the emPHAsis on the “Nnnnnnn“. Yep. That one.
Talk about a punch in the gut. Ooomf. Thump. And Momma’s down for the count.
You know what else? She’s our biggest Snuggle Bunny. Every family has at least one. I don’t think in her 1,200+ days of existence she’s ever refused a cuddle. Like…ever! She came on a 6-week travel journey throughout Southeast Asia with me when she was 16 months old. Just she & I together. You know? We’re tight, man. We nicknamed her “Bear”, like “Teddy-Bear-I-Wanna-Snuggle-All-Day-Long” when she was a mere 5 months old. Yes, we even made up a song about her Snuggle-riffic-ness!
And then, this morning happened.
Today, the day to end all Snuggle Time days. Or maybe not. Maybe she was just testing the waters. Afterall, we barely survived the Battle of Stop Sucking on Your Fingers just last week. Paybacks are a B!tch, Mommy.
All I know is I’m (evidently) more emotionally scarred from this experience than she is. Our Little Mermaid 2 is still doing her usual daily routine: playing, dancing, you know, skipping through the house, singing, “Feel This Moment” (BTW…always be sure to scroll to the bottom of my posts and click on links for the Song du Jour. Then sit back and enjoy the tunes as you read).
Damned Happy-Go-Lucky kid. She’s gonna chew me up and spit me out like nothing else when she’s a teenager. 😉
Yes, time again to repeat my daily mantra:
My most important role in being a Good Enough Mother is to be able to step back and rest in the knowledge I prepared our children to be kind, functional, nurturing, financially independent members of society.
Here’s hoping your transitions from infant to teenager go smoothly. Lord knows I need some tips!
What is the moment when you knew your “baby” was growing up?
