If you are travelling to Southeast Asia, be sure to plan a stopover in Laos.
We spent a week in Luangprabang (aka “Luang Prabang”), and it remains one of my most favorite cities in all the world!
The warm people of Laos are friendly, helpful and smiley. The wats (religious temples) are numerous, as are the young Buddhist monks cloaked in saffron robes.
As with all predominantly Buddhist cultures I’ve visited, I felt a sense of calm reassurance and mutual respect and honor for your fellow humankind while visiting Luangprabang. It was simply sublime.
To See/To Do…
Visiting the wats (temples) and their surrounding grounds is always a lovely, calming activity. You’ll see many young (and I mean, as young as 7 years old) monks praying, working, meditating, strolling the grounds. As a sign of respect, avoid making eye contact or speaking with Buddhist monks unless they communicate with you.
We thoroughly enjoyed our day-long cruise on a longboat on the Mekong River! We simply walked down to the waterfront, negotiated a price with a longboat driver, explained what we wanted to see, and off we went! See LM2 sitting there, peering out the window? We were protected from the light rainstorm inside this longboat, which was handy while travelling with a kiddo.
Our boat driver took us to this amazing “cave temple” on the Mekong River.

We prefer staying in off-the-beaten-path accommodations. When I researched places to stay in Luangprabang, I came across the perfect option. It’s called “Bellevue Bungalows”, and it lies just across the large bridge from the city center. Each bungalow has a bed, an armoire, a private bathroom with hot water shower, and a porch where you enjoy your breakfast each morning. The owner, Phet, is absolutely delightful!
You’ll find information on how to book Bellevue Bungalows at the end of this post in the “Helpful Resources for Travel to Laos”.
